To keep your guitar in optimal condition, store it in a stable environment with:
- Relative humidity: 40% to 60%
- Temperature: 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F)
Using a hygrometer and thermometer is highly recommended, especially during winter when indoor air becomes much drier.
When humidity is too low, it may cause :
- top cracks
- fret ends sticking out
- neck movement
- reduced playing comfort
When humidity is too high, it may lead to:
- wood swelling
- high string action
- body distortion
- glue joint stress
Important Daily Precautions
Here are the most important habits to follow:
- Avoid direct heat sources such as baseboards, radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and direct sunlight
- Avoid placing the guitar near an outside wall during winter
- Never leave the instrument in a freezing vehicle or exposed to extreme cold
- After transporting it in cold weather, allow the guitar to return to room temperature inside its case before opening it
This step is extremely important to avoid thermal shock, which can damage the finish or crack the wood.
Long-Term Storage Tips
If you will not be using your guitar for several weeks:
- slightly loosen the strings
- keep it stored in its case
- place the case in a temperature-controlled room
- avoid damp basements or overly heated rooms
